Firefox x64 coming to Windows 7
Filed under: Uncategorized; Tagged as: 64-bit, firefox, Misc, review, windows 7, Windows 7 UtilitiesMozilla have now indicated that they want to move towards 64-bit versions of Firefox for Windows 7, that would be specifically tailored for the operating system SoftPedia has reported. In a platform meeting on May 25th they strongly indicated that such builds will be forthcoming shortly. Internet Explorer has had 64-bit versions since the launch of Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista but they’re not commonly used because of a lack of plug-in support, especially Adobe Flash. Adobe have previously said that a 64-bit version of the Flash plug-in is not a current priority for them. There are some great benefits to using 64-bit software, especially in the browser. Top of this list is additional security features that running true 64-bit software can offer. It can only be hoped that Mozilla’s move will encourage Adobe to change their policy and view to 64-bit browsers, this would be excellent for consumers and Mozilla should be applauded for doing this. There’s no indication when a 64-bit version of Firefox will appear, but we can assume they would aim to have it ready for the launch of Firefox 4, currently in beta development. There has been a great deal of development in the browser market in recent years but, sadly, 64-bit computing has been right at the bottom of the list. Indeed for the last few years Microsoft has been the ONLY company to bother developing such software. We’ll be watching this news closely and it will be interesting to see what, if at all, Adobe will have to say in reply.Comments Off
